Stories Project (2022)

What is the Stories project about?

The Stories Project aims to gather stories from people with lived experience of alcohol and other drug use from the Northern Territory, which will be shared as part of a national campaign called Rethink Addiction. Rethink Addiction is about helping the public to understand addiction and reduce stigma by listening to people who it affects. Stories from all over Australia will be presented at the Rethink Addiction Convention in September. You can choose for your story to be presented as anonymous, although we will need your name in our files to show that you agreed to be part of the project. We will not share your name with anyone, unless you want your name to be shown with your story. You can look at some examples of other people’s stories for the campaign at

Below are samples from AADANT's 2020-21 media campaign. On 7 June 2020, AADANT released a campaign crating awareness for tretment options for those who experience harmful AOD use and their families. The series of videos, posters and social media banners can be accessed by requesting them through Katie Flynn, These can be displayed in waiting rooms, GP consult rooms, clinics, community centres and more.

Acronym and Abbreviation List 2020 Version 1 (September 2020)

The Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) sector in the Northern Territory is a combination of clinical, therapeutic and support services working with a diverse range of stakeholders and clients.

The abbreviations and acronyms commonly used in meetings and workplaces can make it difficult to interpret for those external to the sector or newly starting in a role.

AADANT have put together this list to help navigate through the terminology and language you are likely to encounter when working in the NT AOD sector.

Youth AOD Directory

This directory is presented in 5 regions:

  • Central Australia
  • Barkly
  • Big Rivers
  • Top End
  • East Arnhem

With categorised support options:

  • Early interventions and counselling
  • Outreach and specialist services
  • Day programs and residential rehabilitation

Alcohol and other drug services working with Young People also have limited capacity across vast regions, so developing holistic support systems are important. In order to provide stability across all aspects of a Young Person’s life, all support options should be:

  • in discussion with a Young Person’s family,
  • accessed in conjunction with local youth and health services,
  • coordinated with a case manager, where suitable and all other support services working with the Young Person.
