AOD Counsellor - CatholicCare

CatholicCare NT's Palmerston office is looking for a part time counsellor (between 0.2FTE/ 7.6hrs and 0.5FTE/19hrs)

CatholicCare NT’s counselling program aims to enable children, young people, and adults in all their diversity to develop and sustain safe, supportive and nurturing family relationships, and reduce the emotional, social and economic costs associated with disruption to family relationships.

The AOD Urban Program is responsible for developing a range of services in the community to support treatment and care options to reduce the harm for clients and their families affected by alcohol and other drugs (AOD). Services are to be delivered with the aim of facilitating sustained recovery and relapse prevention.

The role of the Counsellor is to work within a cohesive and integrated team, providing high quality, responsive and culturally appropriate counselling services. It also contributes to the overall integration of AOD Programs within the Darwin region, which includes programs that support individuals affected by substance misuse across the age spectrum from children to adults.

The Counsellor works within AOD best-practice frameworks and has a particular focus on using a family systems model of intervention to work with all family members where possible. This position, and the program overall, are expected to work within a multidisciplinary team, and actively contribute to the overall integrated service model.

Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards

• Provide a family systems model of prevention, intervention, access to treatments and ongoing support to families and individuals affected by AOD.
• Utilise strengths-based theory base that is provided within the harm minimisation framework
• Work with participants to establish the impact their AOD misuse, is having upon all aspects of their lives, and that of their family and community.
• Facilitate referrals to other services so that participants can have their needs met and a support network is developed to assist with decreasing the harm caused by AOD misuse.
• applying evidence based, therapeutic targeted interventions and trauma informed methodologies to work towards agreed upon goals and deliver wellbeing outcomes for clients
• working in a way that ensures a high-quality service delivery including engaging in regular supervision, critical reflection, evaluation, and maintaining positive relationships across programs and services
• ensuring that program guidelines, code of conduct, and organisational polices are followed
• Compliance with relevant WH&S and CSNET audit requirements

Selection Criteria
1) Relevant qualification in in and/ or postgraduate experience in Psychology or Counselling essential.
2) Membership or eligibility to join a governing body such as PACFA, AASW or ACA
3) Demonstrated experience in using a broad range of evidence-based counselling and group work approaches to support participant outcomes whose life is affected by alcohol or other drug use.
4) Strong interpersonal and communication skills including case note writing.
5) Demonstrated cultural competency, particularly in working with Indigenous people

Special Conditions
1) Must be an Australian Citizen or have unlimited work rights within Australia.
2) This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal history check that must demonstrate that you have not had inappropriate dealings with children or been charged or convicted of a domestic violence offence.
3) Valid NT Drivers Licence and Ochre Card.
4) This position requires you to apply for a Working with Children Clearance/Ochre Card prior to your employment commencement date and send us receipt of payment. This will be at your own cost.
5) If you have resided in an overseas country for 12 months or more in the past 10 years, this position requires you to complete an International Criminal History check (ICHC) prior to your employment commencement date. The outcome of the initial screening check must be satisfactory.
6) This position is classified as a mandatory worker position for the purpose of COVID-19 vaccines and directions issued by the NT Chief Health Officer.
7) Six-month probation period.
8) Non-smoking working environment.

10) Evidence of qualification attainment will be required.
